Titanus
One hundred years of film history

Events for the centenary in 2004

Sala Sinopoli - Auditorium The hundred years of Titanus deserve a party and even more, if only for the important role that cinema played in the cultural and civil growth of our country. So we thought about emphasizing the Titanus centenary with a series of events that are not limited to being self-celebrating. They will be an occasion for public involvement in initiatives of social solidarity. In other words, we thought about dedicating attention and resources to the many human beings who can never hope to live one hundred years. And all too often not even ten. Or five.

This is where we chose to involve UNICEF, the UN organisation caring for the less fortunate children in the world, in a cinema event that will take off next summer. For ten weeks, from the end of June to the beginning of September, in as many Italian cities, the most important and significant films of our history will be shown. The public can see them by paying a low entrance price: a two-euro coin. All proceeds will be given to UNICEF for financing their projects in the aid of children.

Goffredo Lombardo Titanus celebrate their centennial. We are preparing to celebrate our one hundred years of cinema and television in 2004, and above all to honour the work of so many men and women, famous or unknown, whose professionalism and passion have brought us this far.

I am a few years younger than Titanus. Yet I am the right age to proudly say that I have lived with Italian cinema, continuing a family tradition that began with my mother Leda Gys and my father Gustavo, and now continues with my son Guido. Ours is the history of entertainment (yesterday the cinema, today TV series), and it is the history of a magic world of dreams, emotions, gratification and enthusiasm. Yet it is also one of demanding choices, costly sacrifices and daring bets.

Hundreds and hundreds of films, hundreds of stories told through images spanning a century. First silent, shaky scenes, in black and white, with the pianist in the dark, keeping his eye on the screen as he pounded his musical commentary on the keys. Then sound, colour, the lustre of cinemascope, the suggestive surroundings. And the best-loved actors, the most celebrated directors, the most prestigious awards, the titles of works that will remain forever on the golden list of the seventh art.
In the meantime, with one hundred years of experience (yet, as Vitaliano Brancati wrote, a man can be twenty twice without feeling the weight of forty), Titanus moves forward, building its future day after day. At first the main occupation was cinema, now above all TV, producing television serials. Titanus now invests its experience and passion to produce new stories and new images to keep us company on the small screen of that household appliance that at times many people say they hate as much as they hate peanuts (the great Orson Welles said that). But they can’t stop eating peanuts .

Other initiatives in 2004

Taking an idea of Enrico Lucherini and Goffredo Lombardo the realisation of the film "Titanus: a century of cinema and television" has begun, which traces the Titanus history through the most meaningful moments of the films produced by the Lombardo family, starting from the silent films in the early 1900's, up to the latest productions for television. The film will be shown in Rome's Auditorium during a commemorative evening.

"Il libro del cinema" in a revised, corrected edition, and "Il libro della fiction" edited by Carlo Gregoretti, collect the entire cinema and television production of Titanus with ample space dedicated to posters, photos and anecdotes about the history of each film.

In the centenary year, RAI Cinema will be broadcasting 66 films produced by Titanus. Stars, people representative of Italian film history such as Vittorio Gassman, Marcello Mastroianni, Sophia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida, Claudia Cardinale, Ugo Tognazzi, Anna Magnani, Totò, Alberto Sordi, and many others.
