Freshness and the right dose of satire in a merry-go-round of great actors<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One year on from the sparkling La nonna Sabella<\/em>, the sequel was ready to hit the cinemas. Director Dino Risi has stepped aside to be replaced behind the camera by Giorgio Bianchi, but the original cast all are back for more. And thank goodness for that, considering that the success of the film relies heavily on the spirit and personality of the performers, who bring to life a delightful merry-go-round of love, deceptions, resentments and reconciliations. Once again, the film is dominated by Tina Pica as the irresistible and tremendous old woman with a quicksilver wit, with the supporting cast playing a large part in bringing freshness and the just right dose of satire to proceedings. Less successful than the original, but did that cause many people to complain at the time? Perhaps. But it is worth taking note of how a “less successful” film from those years, still has the ability to make a wonderful impression today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Lucia and Raffaele get married, but they even have to put up with the behaviour of Nonna Sabella on their honeymoon. The two elderly newlyweds, Sabella’s sister and husband Emilio, have stayed behind in the village in Campania. The cunning old lady learns that some Americans are interested in buying some of their family land, under which there may be an oil well. There is just one problem: a clause in the will states that ownership of the land must pass to the firstborn heiress. Sabella tries in every way possible to encourage Lucia and Raffaele to conceive a baby girl.
