A solid melodrama that is not afraid to pull at the audience’s heartstrings. However, the themes of this Matarazzo-style family drama still ring true today. The crisis that envelops the protagonists is caused by the unscrupulous sort of journalism that does not care if a story is true or not, as long as it sells. Vittorio Gassman’s performance as the cynical journalist is a pleasant surprise. He shares the screen with two excellent character actors: Martine Carol and Gabriele Ferzetti. The quality of the story is guaranteed by Suso Cecchi D’Amico (the greatest female writer of Italian cinema) and Ettore Giannini (who had recently made his directorial debut with the surprising Carosello napoletano<\/em>). Cinematographer Gianni di Venanzo also contributes to the success of the film, with its vivid urban setting between Milan and Bergamo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The investigations of a journalist in search of a scandal cause a serious marital crisis between Pietro and Elena. The husband even begins to doubt that he is their daughter’s real father.
