In this film, the ice-cool and solitary hitman, who normally has complete control over everything, finds himself in a state of disorientation. He is betrayed without understanding why, in a foreign country where everyone speaks a foreign language. The always excellent Jacques Deray’s wonderful direction is cynical and essential. Jean- Louis Trintignant\u2019s performance is lethal, in every possible way, supported by a strong cast. French noir finds itself in the USA, but doesn’t lose an ounce of its enthusiasm for a well-constructed plot, and remains every bit as psychologically and emotionally engaging.
