Following the success of Zorro, directed by Duccio Tessari and starring Alain Delon, Franco Franchi lost no time in donning the black mask and costume of the famous hero. And naturally, as Franchi is involved, here the legend is infused with farce. He plays a young man who has become over-sophisticated and dandified by a prolonged stay in Paris. However, when he sleepwalks at night, he surprisingly becomes a more than capable emulator of the heroic Zorro. Even if, in this film, the traditional “Z” he leaves behind him is actually the initial of the woman he loves. The much-loved Sicilian’s comedy repertoire is enriched by enjoyable moments of lively adventure, although the characteristic duels of cloak and sword cinema are here highly distorted and parodied.
Paco returns to Nueva Aragón after a long stay in Paris that has turned him into a dandy. The country is under the harsh rule of General Ruarte, but Paco doesn’t appear to have the right temperament to cause him any problems. However, his servants realise that while sleepwalking, he emulates the fearless and skilled Zorro. Well-timed doses of sleeping pills are the perfect way to overcome the arrogant Ruarte and win the heart of the beautiful Zaira.
