A biopic of the life of Salvatore Gambardella, a maestro of the Neapolitan musical tradition
A wonderful opportunity to hear unforgettable songs from the history of Italian music
The biopic of Salvatore Gambardella (1871-1913), unanimously considered one of the founding fathers of the Neapolitan singing tradition, as well as the author of many classic songs that people today still sing with tears in their eyes. To mention just a few: Ninì Tirabusciò, ‘O marenariello, Comme facette mammeta, as well as Quanno tramonta o sole, from which the film takes its name. Guido Brignone was one of the most skilled and prolific directors in Italian cinema. He had been active since the silent era and directed an immense body of work, and had many very successful films. In addition to an accurate portrayal of the life of its subject, there is also plenty of room for narrative fluidity, local colour, pleasant romance and above all unforgettable songs. A young Carlo Giuffré perfectly embodies Gambardella. And we cannot neglect to mention his co-star, the beautiful Abbe Lane, and two of the most beautiful voices in Italian music: Giacomo Rondinella and Alberto Rabagliati.
Salvatore is an Neapolitan factory worker with a talent for music, even if he can’t write a note. This doesn’t prevent him from becoming a celebrity. A failed romance and a new contract see him move to Milan, where he begins a relationship with a singer. However, his yearning for Naples is too strong. He returns to his hometown and meets his old flame. But after so many years of hard work his heart can withstand no more.
