Mystery, thriller, spy story and psychotic distortions in a film of extraordinary tension and sumptuous visual magnificence
The suspense of a thriller, the mystery of a spy story, the domestic tension of a family that finds itself immersed in a deadly situation, the seeds of madness that blur the boundaries between what is real and what is not. René Clement’s film is a very accomplished work that hides many different tones. Faye Dunaway and Frank Langella slip perfectly into their roles, and for much of the story allow themselves to be overlooked in favour of the visual magnificence of the film, which on occasion seems to drags us into a fantasy world. French critic Henri Chapier praises it as: “The work of a goldsmith.” The film also gives us Paris as never before seen.
