From Bonvi’s famous comic book, an anarchic explosion of gags in the most absurd of wars
Based on the famous comic strip by Bonvi, with a screenplay by Renato Pozzetto and Cochi Ponzoni, Sturmtruppen is one the most successful unions of cinema and comic book. With its fast-paced episodic narrative, the film’s plot and message incredibly manage to become extremely coherent. It has a highly charged anarchist spirit, in which laughter is constantly mixed with death, throwing a hand grenade into the absurdity of war. Cochi and Renato give standout performances from a cast of wonderful comic actors (Teo Teocoli, Lino Toffolo, Massimo Boldi…). Without forgetting about Corinne Cléry, who the previous year had made the torrid Histoire d’O: she appears purpose-made to cause soldiers to lose their heads. The title song, written by Enzo Jannacci, has become a universal anthem to be sung in bars.
A disorderly Wehrmacht unit, led by deviant generals and sadistic sergeants, is fighting an absurd war. They are joined by an Unknown Soldier dressed in white who starts preaching peace. The Pope will silence him with a poisoned host.
