The coming together of cinema and nuns has never shied away from taking forays into forbidden territory. Obviously, the temptation is too strong. The fact that the lead character in this film is played by Rosanna Schiaffino (previously a successful beauty queen, for obvious reasons, before giving herself to the cinema), adds a little spice to proceedings. But above all else, Violenza per una monaca focuses the audience’s attention on a challenging moral dilemma. After becoming pregnant as a result of being raped, the nun finds herself forced to make a decision she doesn’t want to: remain faithful to her religious vows and abandon the child in her womb, or begin a new life out in the world as a mother? Through the film, we accompany the nun as she stand at this crossroads. Which is the greater violence: rape, loneliness or abandonment? Or being forced to choose? There are no easy answers.
