One of the greatest ever adventure films for children
Full of drama and action, wild and passionate, like the Klondike of Jack London
The resounding success of this film triggered an authentic cinematic craze, leading to the production of a succession of sequels, some official, some not. But the original work by Lucio Fulci still beats them all. Obviously the story is based on the great classic of literature by Jack London, and is a respectful adaptation of the novel, even if it solely concentrates on the events based in the Klondike (shot in Austria at 2,000 metres). Distancing itself from “Disney-style” films for children, Lucio Fulci’s film never intends to sugar-coat reality or console the viewer: indeed, in many ways it is a ruthless tale in which the real beasts are human. On the other hand, neither is White Fang a mascot of purity and goodness: his instinct can turn him into a fighting machine, capable of killing a man and getting the better of a bear. Above all, however, it is a fantastic adventure film that has nothing to envy from anyone: well paced, full of action, emotionally involving, with a superb international cast and wonderful storytelling.
In the Klondike of the gold rush, White Fang (a cross between a wolf and a dog) has to fight for survival against scheming and dishonest Beauty Smith, the man who controls Dawson City. In his adventures, the animal is helped by a young Indian named Mitsah, the journalist Jason Scott and Sister Evangelina.
