Synopsis

Four major stars of Italian comedy cinema in a hilarious tale of monks and swindles

The comic strength of this film lies in the assembling of a quartet of the best Italian comedy actors: Peppino De Filippo, Aldo Fabrizi, Nino Taranto and Erminio Macario. With each of them bringing their own distinctive and much-loved style to their character. The excellent Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia directs proceedings in just the right dosage, giving each of the stars equal opportunity to shine. It is a perfectly orchestrated choral performance, where from time to time one of the soloists takes centre stage to administer a gag. Light-hearted and carefree, it all worked so well that the same team reunited the following year for I quattro moschettieri.

To escape the ire of their victims, four swindlers dress up as monks and seek refuge in a convent where they continue their scams, until they are eventually caught.
