Synopsis

The drama, comedy and tragedy of a man in a race against time

Alain Delon gives an exceptionally vibrant performance

The story of a man who devours his own existence. He is a compulsive collector, obsessed with possessing things at any cost, condemned to live a life of restlessness in an eternal challenge against time and death. In short: modern man. The drama of one man’s life becomes a lively comedy in the able hands of Edouard Molinaro, who went on to direct Il vizietto the following year. Comedy turns to tragedy in the final act, just as everything appears to be working out. As ever, Alain Delon gives everything to his character in an exceptionally vibrant performance. And at the moment of sudden death, he unveils a turn of expressive skill worth viewing again and again: his champion of hyperactivity, suddenly, is switched off.

A compulsive art collector leaves his pregnant wife behind to get his hands on a particularly valuable Etruscan vase. The auction day coincides with the birth of the son. Will everything go according to plan?
